Choosing Between Whitening, Bonding or Veneers

If you're a smoker, have had a lot of dental work done or simply regularly consume some of the many foods and drinks that can stain teeth over time, you might have considered getting your teeth whitened. However, not every method is appropriate for everyone. You can speak to a cosmetic dentist about some of the options available.

Whitening

This is generally the first solution people think of, and it is less expensive and invasive than other methods. However, if the stains on your teeth are not surface stains and are the result of dental work, whitening will not change that discoloration. In that case, other methods are needed. Whitening also does not last as long as veneers or bonding.

Veneers

Veneers can be a great solution for teeth that are chipped or uneven as well as those that are discolored due to dental problems, antibiotics or for other reasons. Custom-made shells are placed over teeth. Depending on the type of veneers you get, they may last from five to 15 years, and they are resistant to stains.

Bonding

Instead of a custom-made shell, bonding involves applying a resin to the tooth and sculpting it to the appropriate shape. Bonding is quicker and cheaper than veneers, but teeth that are bonded can also stain just like teeth in their natural state while veneers do not. Bonding also does not last as long as veneers.
